How to make money on Kalshi comes down to one thing: you only profit when your price is better than the market’s, by more than the fee. Kalshi itself takes no side in any market and earns its money from a trading fee that tops out at $1.75 per 100 contracts on most markets, so every dollar you win is a dollar another trader lost. A 2026 study of more than 300,000 Kalshi contracts found the average trader lost money, with the worst losses on cheap long shots.
I am a former financial advisor and a finance teacher, and I trade on Kalshi myself. This is not a get rich guide. It is the honest version: how the fee math works, why most people lose, the habits that give you a real chance, the ways to earn on Kalshi that are not betting at all, and how to get your money out. If you are brand new, start with my guide on how Kalshi works and come back.
Key takeaways
- Kalshi is a neutral exchange. It earns a fee on trades, not on outcomes, so your profit always comes from another trader.
- The standard taker fee is 7 percent of price times one minus price, rounded up. That is $0.07 to $1.75 per 100 contracts as of November 5, 2026.
- Fees hit cheap contracts hardest: about 6.3 percent of your stake at 10 cents versus 0.7 percent at 90 cents.
- Research on 300,000+ Kalshi contracts found takers lost almost 32 percent on average and makers about 10 percent. Long shots won far less often than their price implied.
- Your best tools are limit orders (no fee on most markets), selling early to lock in gains, small position sizes and markets you know better than the crowd.
- Kalshi pays a variable 3.50 percent APY on cash and positions for accounts averaging at least $250, and runs a Liquidity Incentive Program for resting orders through January 1, 2027.
- Event contracts can lose money. Trade only money you can afford to lose.

Can you actually make money on Kalshi?
Yes, you can make money on Kalshi, but the math is stacked against the average trader, so you need an edge. Every Kalshi contract pays $1 if the outcome happens and $0 if it does not. If you buy Yes at 40 cents and you are right, you collect $1 and keep 60 cents of profit before fees. The person who sold you that contract lost 60 cents. Prediction markets are zero sum between traders, and the exchange fee comes out on top.
That means the question is not whether people make money on Kalshi. Some do, every day. The question is whether you can do it over hundreds of trades, after fees. The best public evidence says most people do not.
What the research on 300,000 Kalshi contracts found
Economists Constantin Burgi, Wanying Deng and Karl Whelan studied more than 300,000 Kalshi contracts and their outcomes, and summarized the results in a VoxEU column on February 18, 2026. Three findings matter for anyone trying to make money on Kalshi:
- Prices are informative. Kalshi prices get more accurate as a market gets closer to closing. The crowd is not dumb.
- Long shots lose. The authors found a clear favourite longshot bias. Cheap contracts won far less often than their price implied, so a 10 cent contract wins less than 10 percent of the time. Expensive contracts won slightly more often than their price implied and earned small positive returns.
- Takers lose more than makers. Using Kalshi trade data, takers, the people who hit an existing price, lost almost 32 percent on average. Makers, the people whose resting orders got filled, lost about 10 percent on average.
Read that last line twice. Even the group that did better still lost on average. If you want to be in the small group that wins, you have to trade differently from the crowd, and the rest of this guide is about what that looks like.
How does Kalshi make money?
Kalshi makes money by charging a transaction fee, not by betting against you. Its help center describes Kalshi as a neutral exchange with no financial stake in which way an event goes, and says the exchange earns money by charging a fee on the expected earnings of each contract. Kalshi is regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission as a designated contract market, so it works like a stock exchange for yes or no questions, not like a sportsbook that sets odds and takes the other side.
This matters for you in two ways. First, nobody at Kalshi is rooting for you to lose. Second, the fee is the one cost you pay no matter who wins, so cutting it is the easiest edge you can get. If you want the deeper story on regulation and ownership, I covered it in Is Kalshi legit.
The fee math every Kalshi trader needs
Kalshi’s general trading fee is 0.07 times the number of contracts times the price times one minus the price, rounded up to the next cent. As of November 5, 2026, Kalshi’s fee schedule lists a multiplier of 1 for most markets, which works out to $0.07 to $1.75 in taker fees per 100 contracts, and it shows no upcoming fee changes. The fee is charged when your order fills against a resting order. There is no fee to hold a contract to settlement.
Here is the part most new traders miss. In dollars, the fee is biggest on a 50 cent coin flip. As a share of what you pay, it is biggest on cheap contracts.

Put that into a break even number. If you buy 100 contracts at 10 cents as a taker, you pay $10.00 plus a $0.63 fee. To break even over time, those contracts have to win 10.63 percent of the time, not 10 percent. At 50 cents you need 51.75 percent. At 90 cents you need 90.63 percent. Now remember the research: cheap contracts already win less often than their price says. A long shot buyer starts behind on the probability and then pays the highest fee rate on top of it.

How to make money on Kalshi: 7 habits that give you a chance
There is no system that guarantees a profit on Kalshi, and anyone who sells you one is selling you something. What you can control is cost, patience, size and where you trade. These are the seven habits I use, in order.
How to give yourself a real chance to make money on Kalshi, step by step.
- Trade markets you know better than the crowd
Pick one area where you have real knowledge, such as an economic data release you follow every month or a league you watch every week. Skip markets where you are guessing. Your edge has to come from somewhere.
- Write down your own price before you look
Decide what you think the chance is, as a percentage, before you open the market. If you think a Fed hold is 80 percent likely and Yes costs 70 cents, that is a possible trade. If your number matches the market, there is no trade.
- Use limit orders instead of hitting the price
A limit order that rests on the book and fills later is the maker side, and on most markets the maker fee multiplier is zero. The research found makers lost far less than takers. Be patient and let the price come to you.
- Be careful with cheap long shots
Contracts under about 15 cents carry the highest fee rate and, on the research, win less often than their price implies. Buy one only when you have a specific reason the market is wrong, and size it tiny.
- Take profit when the price moves your way
You do not have to hold to settlement. Sell early with a quick order or a limit sale, or set an auto sell at a target price, to lock in a gain if new information moves the market toward you.
- Size every trade small
Put no more than a small slice of your Kalshi balance on any one market. A good process still loses often, and small sizes let you survive the losing streaks long enough for your edge to show.
- Track every trade and the fee
Log the price you paid, your own estimate, the fee and the result. After 50 trades you will know whether you have an edge or just had a lucky week. Kalshi also gives you a yearly profit and loss statement for taxes.
Habit two is the one that changes everything. Without your own number, you are just reacting to the price on the screen. With it, you can say no to most trades, and saying no is where most of your money gets saved.

Holding to settlement vs selling early
You have two ways to get paid on a winning Kalshi trade. You can hold until the market settles and collect $1 per winning contract, or you can sell before settlement at whatever the market will pay. Kalshi’s help center explains both kinds of sale: a quick order sale sells a set number of contracts at the current market price, and a limit order sale lets you name a price you are willing to sell at or higher.
Selling early is how a lot of profitable traders actually make money on Kalshi. Say you buy Yes at 40 cents on an economic number, and news the day before moves the market to 70 cents. You can lock in 30 cents per contract, minus the fee, without waiting to find out if you were right. Kalshi also offers auto sell, which its help center describes as an optional take profit order: you pick a higher target price after a buy fills, and if the market reaches it, your contracts sell automatically, even when the app is closed.
Holding to settlement has one big advantage: there is no fee at settlement, so a winning contract pays the full dollar. Selling early as a taker costs a fee. My rule is simple. If the price already reflects most of what I expected and the remaining upside is small, I take the money. If my edge is about the final result, I hold.
Earning interest on your Kalshi balance
The one way to make money on Kalshi that does not depend on being right is interest. As of November 5, 2026, Kalshi’s help center lists a prediction market interest rate of 3.50 percent APY on your cash and open positions, including the collateral behind them. The rate is variable and can change at any time.
- Minimum: your average monthly predictions balance, cash plus positions, must be at least $250.
- How it accrues: daily, based on the net value of your portfolio at 12 AM ET, and it is paid monthly.
- What it means: money you have tied up in a long dated market can still earn something while you wait for it to settle.
Do not open an account just for the interest. A high yield savings account or a money market fund does the same job without the temptation to trade. But if you already keep money on Kalshi, it is good to know the idle cash is not sitting at zero.
Market making and liquidity rewards
Market makers are the traders who post both a price to buy and a price to sell, and try to earn the spread between them. Kalshi’s help center says its designated market makers agree to provide steady two sided quotes and, in return, may get reduced fees and adjusted position limits. Approval requires a review of financial resources, trading experience and business reputation, and Kalshi notes that market makers take trading risk and can lose money like anyone else. In plain words, the official program is for firms and serious professionals, not a beginner with $100.
Regular members can still earn from resting orders through Kalshi’s Liquidity Incentive Program. As of the help center version updated November 4, 2026, the program pays a share of a reward pool for resting orders that improve liquidity, even if those orders never fill. Kalshi snapshots the order book once per second and scores eligible orders by size and how close they sit to a reference price. The program runs until January 1, 2027, Kalshi can end or change it at any time, and Kalshi affiliates, international users and certain broker customers are not eligible.
Here is my honest take. Rewards for resting orders are real money, but your resting orders can also fill right before the price moves against you. Professionals call that adverse selection. If you try it, start with tiny size on a market you understand, and count the reward and the trading result together.
How people lose money on Kalshi
These are the most common ways traders lose money on Kalshi:
- Chasing long shots. Buying 5 and 10 cent contracts because the payout looks huge. The fee rate is highest there and, per the research, those contracts win less often than their price says.
- Stacking combos. Every leg has to win, and each leg adds pricing you are paying for. My guide on Kalshi parlays and combos shows the math.
- Trading every market. Ten trades a day on topics you do not follow means ten fees and no edge.
- Doubling up after a loss. Bigger size to win it back is how a bad week becomes an empty account.
- Buying a system. Posts promising a guaranteed way to make hundreds of dollars a day ignore fees, slippage and the other side of the trade. If it worked, nobody would sell it.
- Forgetting the clock. Some markets close early or settle on a specific source. Read the rules tab before you buy so you know exactly what you need to happen.
How I use Kalshi
I check Kalshi odds every day for my videos because the prices tell me what real money expects on the Fed, the economy and elections. On election night 2026 I watched the Democrats sweep contract climb from 71 cents at 3 PM to 99.9 cents by midnight, and I wrote it up in my Kalshi midterms guide.
For my own trading, I like the short term crypto markets, like the 15 minute Ethereum price markets, where I can line up a trade with my own chart work. I keep size small, I use limit orders when I can, and I treat it as one part of my trading, not my whole plan. That is my approach, not a recommendation. Your results will be different from mine, and you can lose money.

How to get your money out and what happens at tax time
Making money on Kalshi only counts once it is back in your bank. Per Kalshi’s help center, you withdraw from the Transfers tab by bank transfer, debit card or crypto, with no Kalshi fee on any of them. Debit withdrawals usually land within hours, bank transfers within a few business days and crypto within about 30 minutes. Fresh deposits can sit under a security hold: Kalshi’s security holds article, updated August 14, 2026, says card and bank deposits are available once they settle when you withdraw the same way, and up to 2 days after settlement if you withdraw by a different method.
On taxes, Kalshi gives you a yearly profit and loss statement and the 1099 forms that apply to your account. How event contract gains are taxed is not fully settled, so keep your own trade log and talk to a tax professional. I walk through the forms and the open questions in my Kalshi fees, withdrawals and taxes guide.
Common questions
Yes, but it is hard. Every dollar you win comes from another trader, and Kalshi charges a fee on trades. A study of more than 300,000 Kalshi contracts found the average trader lost money, so you need a real edge, low costs and small position sizes.
Kalshi makes money from transaction fees, not from betting against users. It is a neutral, CFTC regulated exchange. The standard taker fee is 7 percent of price times one minus price, which is $0.07 to $1.75 per 100 contracts as of November 5, 2026.
Some do, but most do not over time. Economists who studied Kalshi trade data found takers lost almost 32 percent on average and makers about 10 percent. Expensive contracts earned small positive returns while cheap long shots lost the most.
Yes. If your contract settles No, it pays $0 and you lose what you paid plus any fee. Event contracts can lose money, so trade only money you can afford to lose.
Not as a main income. Treat it as a trading tool for questions you understand, with money you can afford to lose. If you want steady growth, long term investing in a diversified portfolio is a better fit for most people.
No. Kalshi sometimes runs offers for new customers. On November 5, 2026, the referral page read “STOCKMOE sent you $50 on Kalshi” and “Trade $25 to unlock,” for new customers only, subject to Kalshi’s current terms and eligibility.
Go to Transfers, choose Withdraw, and pick bank transfer, debit card or crypto. Kalshi charges no withdrawal fee. Debit usually arrives within hours and bank transfers within a few business days.
As of November 5, 2026, Kalshi pays a variable 3.50 percent APY on cash and open positions if your average monthly balance is at least $250. Interest accrues daily and is paid monthly.
